Purebred Quarter Horses have a distinctively compact and sturdy build of the body. They are smaller than all other horses and are the fastest among all of them. There is but limited amount of white on the muzzle and on the lower parts of the legs. If there are white spots somewhere other than on the legs or the muzzle, it is not a purebred Quarter Horse.
All purebred Quarter Horses pass registration procedures at the American Quarter Horse Association or other local similar associations. Only pure species can participate in breeding programs. Participating in this procedure prevents faulty features from infiltrating the breed. Quarter Horse Associations also provide information on care, training and health concerns.
Quarter Horses - Health Hazards
Quarter horses, like many other species, can be prone to a number of diseases. Those can be infections and genetic illnesses. In some cases, a large degree of susceptibility among one particular breed is clearly observable. Thus, in the equine Sarcoid predisposition rating, Quarter Horses are only second to Thoroughbreds.
'Equine Sarcoid' is a skin tumor, which frequently develops on the head, limbs and abdomen. Papilloma virus infection usually provokes it and it can emerge from warts, papillomas, and ulcers. Large amount of neoplastic fibroblasts characterize Sarcoid. They recur frequently after an operation, but virtually they have no metastasis potential.
Some species can be genetically predisposed to sarcoids. Removing tumors by way of surgical excision or various therapy methods, which include cryotherapy, laser therapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy and chemotherapy, are ways to treat sarcoids.
The Hyperkalemic Paralysis is typical of Quarter Horses. Occasional paralytic attacks characterize this disease and, in hard cases, it leads to lethal outcomes. Improper development of the sodium potassium channel in muscle cells causes this disease. This leads to shortage of potassium, which entails tremors, spasms and weakness of muscles. These deficiencies may occur not only in limbs or close to surface, but they also can affect the functioning of respiratory and digestion organs.
Like other species, quarter horses can be susceptible to contagious diseases. In order to reduce the risk of catching an infection, the young require regular vaccinations. Adult horses, if cared for properly, are less prone to infections. Quarter Horses may suffer from influenza, which requires a qualified treatment and preventive measures in the aftermath, because there is no effective vaccine against it.
