English colonists, who were ardent short distance racers, brought the first ancestors of the Quarter Horse to America in the 1600s. They arranged competitive down-the-street races and the fastest species became breeding stock for future competitions and referred to as Celebrated American Quarter Running Horses. In 1940, the breed received an official status and the American Quarter Horse became registered.

Quarter Horses are also famous for their remarkable cattle driving aptitude. They have a wonderful ability to maneuver and keep livestock well in control. Their agility and maneuverability have earned them the reputation of brilliant barrel-roping rodeo horses.

Now Quarter horses are very popular. If you visit a ranch, a rodeo event, or watch a Western movie, there is 90 per cent certainty that you will see a Quarter Horse. Any purebred Quarter Horse registered by the American Quarter Horse Association can be involved in breeding programs for Quarter Horses.
